20th October 2026

October on Long Island is short.
The trees turn, the light softens, the temperature drops just enough to justify a sweater. You get maybe three, four good weekends of peak fall foliage before it's all over and you're staring down November. Every one of those weekends should be spent outside, not staring at a laundry pile.
Here's how to actually enjoy fall this year without spending Sunday folding sweaters.
The North Fork in October is the entire reason you live out here. Peak foliage, harvest season, tasting rooms packed with pinot and cab franc, and just enough of a chill in the air that a fire pit at the end of a vineyard feels perfect.
Plan a full Saturday: start with breakfast in Riverhead, drive out through the vineyards, hit two or three tasting rooms, grab lunch at a farm-to-table spot in Cutchogue or Southold, and end the day at a cider mill or a pumpkin patch. Head back through Riverhead at sunset.
Come home Sunday night, drop the wine-splashed cardigans and cider-stained jeans on the porch, and let us handle it. You keep the memories, we handle the aftermath.
Every year, the same trip. Load the kids in the car, drive to a farm, pick more apples than you'll ever eat, hoist a pumpkin the size of a small dog into the trunk, and drive home covered in hay, dirt, and juice stains.
Families in Bay Shore and Massapequa hit the farms every weekend in October. So do we, honestly. And we know what comes back with you: the flannel shirt with the apple juice stain, the jeans with mud caked into the knees, the sweatshirt somehow covered in glitter from the hayride, and the kids' outfits that need to be washed by Monday morning for school.
Hand it off. Skip the Sunday night triage.
You don't have to go all the way out to the North Fork to catch the color. Some of the best fall foliage drives are closer than you think:
Pack a thermos, wear the good hiking boots, take the kids, take the dog. Come home muddy and happy. Let us handle whatever the laundry situation looks like.
